Tyranny and Apathy
Utah's electoral votes are pretty much set already, right? I mean, no matter what I do, it seems, they're going to vote for Bush. What, then, is my motivation for voting? Everyone I talk to seems to either not care who wins or they think that their vote is impotent to make a difference. I hate the idea of not caring who wins, because it seems like that takes away from my right to self-governance, but if my vote doesn't matter, then maybe that right has already been taken away.

I've wondered the same thing, but I think that they're doing the best they can considering the circumstances. I don't think there's a way to completely guarantee 100% that every voter in the US has a vote that for sure counts. But I do agree that it's frustrating, especially in states like Utah.
Another thought: They keep on telling everyone to vote (rock the vote, vote or die, etc) but they aren't encouraging people to be INFORMED voters. Please, guys, don't listen to newspaper headlines and what people say. Do your own research and give an informed vote.
Also, do you think there's any chance they might add "None of the above" as an option for the presidential race?
You could do what Ben's grandma is doing--trade your vote with someone from a different state.
I don't think that being informed means NOT listening to newspaper headlines or what other people say. On the contrary, I think that being informed is listening to what everyone says, and putting together your views after hearing all of the opposing viewpoints.
Something that I have learned in one of my classes this semester is that everyone has an agenda. If you have an idea what their agenda is then you can look at what they say through their eyes and evaluate it for yourself. Even someone's tone can affect interpretation. I won't bore anyone with statistics, but a group that keeps watch over the media released a report that said that Fox News had the least biased coverage of the Presidential Debates. Bill O'Reilly is great. Now you know my agenda.
