300

Ok, seriously. I don't get it. I realize that I don't watch as much TV as I should, but I hadn't even heard of 300 until (the) Don posted about it. Now it seems like it's the only movie anyone ever talks about. I don't understand where it came from or why the hype is so big.

And the funny thing about this is that, despite all of the hype and how much everyone is talking about this movie, no one ever talks about why it is good. All I've heard so far is that the it's the best war movie ever, but the only indication of why is just because it's the most violent war movie ever.

Now, I understand that some movies are strictly entertainment and don't try to be more meaningful than that. I'm fine with that. There's a lot of those movies that I enjoy. I also understand that sometimes violent media are entertaining (and though I probably shouldn't think so, there's some of these that I enjoy, too).

So, I ask this not by way of criticism, but as an actual question for anyone that's seen this movie: Is it good?

yes. it is good. it is definitely aesthetically pleasing.

is that the only good thing about it? is there anything uplifting or redeeming about it? if it were somehow enlightening--even while being disturbing--i'd still think it at least deserves consideration.

however, "definitely aesthetically pleasing" doesn't necessarily equal "good" in my mind. I can think of a few things that i would classify as "not good" even though they are meant to be nice to look at.

...but how do people ever come to a consensus on something like this anyway?

How do you post web addresses.

From a comment you need to actually use the HTML tags. Example:

Why is 300 good, or great in my mind? This is a classic war movie similar to Troy or Gladiator, but a lot better. 300 takes you to a nation bred to fight, a nation unheard of. When the child is 8 they kick them out of the city to fend for themselves and come back true warriors. They are real men, it is a nation that thrives on war, and when challenged by the biggest army, they send the 300 best against the government's consent.
This movie stands out to me because, yes it is aesthetically pleasing, but it is a great story of a nation that does not know defeat, does not know what humility is.
I would go see this movie at least four times in the theatre. It is the best movie I have seen in quite some time. This is a must see

I thought Troy was crap. It had some really cool fight scenes, but as a whole, I thought the movie stunk. Violence and sex with no substance.

And Matt, what do you mean they are "real men" ...Since they were kicked out of home as children and became killers they're real men now?

No, they're not real men just because they're homeless killers, but that plus being super-ripped, and maybe plus having a mullet and wearing gold chains (depending on the era).

But about this movie, I learned from following Ronnie's link around Wikipedia that the movie is based on a comic book called "300". That kind of makes the "aesthetically pleasing" thing make more sense to me, but it also makes me think that it probably doesn't offer anything more than entertainment (which I'm not sure justifies the violence).

As I partly inspired Bryant's blog, I will give my 2 cents. Note: As I have not yet seen 300 but am going to see it tomorrow night, these are still my pre-movie thoughts. The same ones that partly inspired my original posting.

First of all, yes it is visually/aesthetically pleasing. It is directly styled after noted comic book writer/artist Frank Miller's work by the same name and maintains his vision exceptionally (see Sin City for another excellent adaptation of his work). But Kel, you're right. Just because something is pretty crap doesn't change the fact that it is crap.

So what is it? Simply put it is an oversimplification of a classic struggle of "good" versus "evil". The simplified Spartans with their positive "manly" virtues (personal strength, courage, honor, etc.) hold off, for a time, an invading "evil" army with superior numbers. Thermopylae was basically the Greek's "Alamo". In going to see 300, I am excited to see a fun movie that is put together well. Zach Snyder (the director) was not attempting to put together another Citizen Kane. He took Frank Miller's oversimplified tale of the Battle of Thermpylae and made a fun movie out of it. Basically I'm going to see it because I want to get pumped up while the metal soundtrack blows my face off.

Does it tell an uplifting story? Yes. It's the classic "underdog" tale. Is it complex? No. Is it fun? Depends on what you like. It is not a "thinking" movie. I enjoyed movies like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Syriana". Movies I go into expecting to think. This movie I'm just ready to kick back and enjoy. And I think it will be good.

To clarify what I mean by "real men" is what you percieve in your mind to be a man of that time period. What do you imagine to be a Viking? Probably a 7 foot 300 pound man that eats meat and has no virtue. I pictured the men of 300 to be just how they were portrayed in the movie, on steriods and killing machines. By today's standards they are by no way a real man, they wear a leather loin cloth and a cape, which would be percieved today as gay, and they would have little to no income with their manly fighting skills. So by saying "real man" I am sorry for deceiving all of you with my poor mistakes, I will try to proof read what I say next time and have my mother check for gramer mistake.

About 95% of the movie was shot in front of a blue screen. So that's one reason for the asthetic-ness. It's pretty much all computer graphics.

Matt is a real man. Anyone who can make a leopard-print cowboy outfit look that good is definitely a real man. I still have that picture on my phone, by the way.

I'd like someone to post this same blog, but replacing all instances of "300" with "Obama". The media and the nation are hopelessly in love with him, but nobody knows what he's about.
